The Comanche

• Previously part of the Wind River Shoshone, the Comanche split off around 1700
  • Split after acquiring horses from the Pueblo
  • Horses gave them greater mobility for hunting
• They migrated south to the Southern Plains and “New Spain” (present-day New Mexico) to find more horses
• Horses became the focal point of Comanche culture
